A diamond certificate is like an x-ray of the diamond. It tells about the measurement, the weight, the shape, the depth, the cut, the clarity, the colour, the quality as well as several other characteristics. Although you do not receive a monetary value on a certification (this is what an appraisal will do), you will receive assurance that your diamond is guaranteed to be of a high standard.
There are several different certification companies in the United States and worldwide. This includes the EGL (the European Gemological Laboratory), the AGS (American Gem Society), the IGI (International Gemological Institution) and the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Although all of these certification companies boost high standard diamond rings and up-to-date verification processes, the GIA is one of the biggest and most trusted name in diamond labs.
The Gemological Institute of America
The GIA is the world largest and one of the most respected institutes of gemological research. For over 75 years, the GIA has provided outstanding service in gemology. They are considered the experts of diamonds and the godfathers of certification.
This multiple-award winning institution has laboratories, research centers and education centers all over the world including South Africa, Hong Kong and India. Their extensive education on the subject of gemology is impressive to say the least. You will be rest assured that your diamond is of the highest quality when purchasing a GIA certified diamond.
Why a GIA Certified Diamond?
There are several advantages to purchasing a GIA certified diamond. First and foremost, you know exactly what you are buying. You can be rest assured your diamond is valuable and will have a certificate that proves it.
A GIA certified diamond also means you will not have to worry about fracture-filled diamonds or synthetic diamonds. This is because fracture-filled diamonds (artificially filled diamonds that may look good but are false), will never be certified by the GIA. Furthermore, synthetic, or man-made diamonds are not certified.
Where to Find GIA Certified Diamonds
Most reputable jewelers sell GIA certified diamonds. However, many do not have them in stock and most GIA certified diamonds do not come in a large quantity. Again, this will just ensure that your diamond is one-of-a-kind and up to the standards you are looking for.
However, keep in mind that GIA certified diamonds are quite expensive. In fact, they tend to cost 10-20 per cent more than EGL certified diamond and are much more expensive than non certified diamonds. You are highly unlikely to find a GIA certified diamonds for less than $1,000. Furthermore, a GIA certified diamond most likely will not weight less than 0.5 carat or have color lower than I or clarity less than SI2.
When you purchase a GIA certified diamond, you are also purchasing a promise of a high standard gemstone.
After all, isn’t she worth it?
