There is no doubt that diamonds are both strong and durable. As a matter of fact, they are the hardest known naturally occurring mineral, which explains why a diamond can easily cut glass. However, they still need to be taken care of as they are a rare and valuable artifact. If you’re not careful, they can scratch or chip, so don’t let the words, “A diamond is the hardest gem” fool you. There is also the fact that skin oils, cosmetics, perfumes, and hair sprays find their way onto diamonds, which can make them dull.

If you want to ensure that your diamond is going to be as vibrant as ever, you have to know how to clean it right. No, this isn’t referring to holding it under a faucet of running water and then simply putting it back on. Some of the oils and such that accumulate can be water resistant, which means you’ll never get rid of the dirt and grime this way.

Here are some ways in which you can properly clean your diamonds:

  • You can use a commercial jewelry cleaner. This will more or less give you a quick clean by dipping it in and wiping your jewelry clean with a soft cloth.
  • One of the most effective, cheap, and common ways in which you can clean your diamonds is to use ammonia mixed with cold water. By mixing 50% ammonia and 50% water, you have one of the most powerful cleaning methods on your hands. Soak for 30 minutes and you’re in business.
  • Anytime you’re using a jewelry cleaning solution of a water and ammonia solution, you need to clean between and around prongs. This can be done by using a soft brush such as an eyebrow brush. Just make sure to hold the diamonds by their settings and not by the stone itself.
  • After using your brush to clean in between and around prongs, make sure you dip the jewelry back into your liquid solution. This is so you can rinse away those loose particles.
  • You can always choose the high tech route by using an ultrasonic cleaner. Just make sure you view reviews on these machines before settling for one. You want to make sure the cleaner that you choose is the right cleaner for you. You want to make sure it is going to do the job that the manufacturer says it will do.
Using these methods and steps will give you brilliantly clean diamonds. Just make sure you stay away from the toothpaste and toothbrush method. The reason is because you don’t want small particles in the toothpaste scratching your diamond. Then there is the fact that the toothbrush itself could scratch the diamond. You also want to make sure you always use lint-free cloths because even lint can be dangerous.

As long as you exercise healthy cleaning practices, your diamond will remain as brilliant as ever. It will also live a long life. Cleaning your diamond is a rather simple practice, so it is definitely a great routine to get into.
